Although MegaMillions and Powerball are the most popular lotteries in the United States, it doesn’t mean that state lotteries shouldn’t also get recognition when they deserve it, especially if they have jackpots as nice as those in the SuperLotto Plus lottery.
Based on the same rules as MegaMillions, SuperLotto Plus is a lottery exclusive to the state of California, meaning that tickets can only be bought on its territory.
How does it work exactly, what are the odds of winning, and how can you win the jackpot? Find the answers to those and more questions below!

About the SuperLotto Plus
SuperLotto Plus is a lottery that is very similar to MegaMillions, the only difference being that it is exclusive to the state of California. The lottery game was first launched in 1986, as California SuperLotto. It wasn’t until the year 2000 that the name was changed to CA SuperLotto Plus.
SuperLotto Plus California was established by the California State Lottery, which is a state lottery entity started in 1984. It acts under the California State Lottery Act.
How To Play SuperLotto Plus
In order to play the California SuperLotto Plus lottery, you need to choose six numbers in total – five main numbers from 1 to 47, and one number from 1 to 27, which is the MEGA number. To win, you have to match all six numbers.
If you already have numbers that you’d like to play with, you can mark them on your own on the play slip, or you can opt for the Quick Pick feature. With Quick Pick, you have the option to either let the machine choose all six numbers for you, or it can pick five main numbers and let you pick the MEGA number. Also, you can buy lottery tickets in advance (up to 20 draws) – just choose the Advance Play option.
Every California SuperLotto ticket has a 2nd Chance code, which grants you entries to the 2nd Chance weekly draws. There are five $15,000 prizes to win. The more money you play, the more chances you have of becoming a winner of one of them. Every dollar you spent on the lottery equals one entry, which means that if you, for example, spend 10 dollars on a single ticket, you get 10 entries. You can submit up to 500 2nd Chances codes a month.

Can I Buy the SuperLotto Plus Ticket Online?
Technically, you can’t, unless an online concierge buys a lottery ticket on your behalf from a licensed SuperLotto retailer. However, there are plenty of websites that do that, meaning that you can participate in the California lottery even if you aren’t a resident of the state. Just keep in mind that if you want to take part in it, no matter if you are located in California or outside of it, you have to be at least 18 years old.
What To Do If I Win the SuperLotto Plus – How To Claim the Prize?
How you can claim the prize depends mainly on how much you won. If your prize is lower than $599, then you can claim it at any of the licensed retailers.
If you win more than $599, you can claim it at a Lottery District Office – just bring the winning lottery ticket and a completed Winner Claim Form (you can get it from a lottery retailer or online). You can also claim it by mail – by sending the form to the California State Lottery’s address. If you have a Claim Authorization Receipt, you should include that too.
Remember to keep a copy of any document you send just in case – after all, you never know what can happen, and it’s better to be safe than sorry.
After your winner’s form is processed in the lottery’s headquarters, you will receive your check in the mail (it should take about 12 to 14 weeks).
When it comes to how the jackpot is paid out, you can choose between being paid in one lump sum (in cash) or an annuity, where the jackpot will be paid in installments over 30 years. With each year, the amount increases – during the first year, you’ll receive 1.81% of the jackpot, and during the 30th year, you’ll receive 5.56% of it. Most people decide to take cash.
