La Primitiva is one of the oldest lotteries in the world – its first drawing was held over two centuries ago, in 1763. Because of its long history, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that it experienced quite a few changes.

La Primitiva started its existence as Lotería por Números, with the original format being 5/50. In 1812, the name was changed to what we know it as today – however, in 1862 the lottery was abolished by a royal decree. The lottery didn’t start again until 1985 – the very first draw of the new version was held on October 17 of that year.

How does La Primitiva look like today? Did it change a lot? What format does it use? What are the odds of winning? Find out below!

About La Primitiva

As we already mentioned, La Primitiva has quite a history. During its existence, the Spanish lottery underwent a few changes. While we will not go into detail about each of them, we will talk about some of the most recent ones that affect La Primitiva today.

In 2013, the jackpot offered by the lottery was increased, which resulted in it being one of the most profitable lotteries in the world today. What’s more, around that time new features were added, such as the Joker – however, more about that later.

How To Play La Primitiva

La Primitiva is a rather interesting lottery game to play. Firstly, the player needs to select six main numbers from 1 to 49, as well as one bonus number, known as the Complementario. Once that is done, there’s one more number they will play with, called the Reintegro – and there wouldn’t be anything unusual about it, if it wasn’t for the fact that the player does not get to choose it. The number is randomly assigned to them and it can be anything between 0 and 9.

In order to win the main prize, which is the jackpot plus an additional prize, you need to match the six main numbers, as well as the Reintegro. Matching only the main numbers will win you only the jackpot. What’s more, in case you match only the Reintegro, and no other number, you will be refunded what you paid for the ticket.

Now, when it comes to the Complementario – this number only comes in handy if you match five main numbers, as it allows you to take home as much as 20 times what you would get for a regular Match 5.

Finally, the Joker. The Joker is an additional lottery game played alongside La Primitiva. Once you check the right box, to indicate that you want to take part in the Joker, the system will assign you a combination of seven numbers (from 0,000,000 to 9,999,999). Since the number is unique, it is impossible to have two winners of the jackpot prize. The winning Joker number is drawn by extracting seven balls from a drum that contains ten balls labeled from 0 to 9. Keep in mind that after a number is drawn it is put back in the drum, which means that the same one can be picked more than once. The jackpot prizes in this Spanish lottery mini-game are always the same – €1,000,000. However, there are also some lower-tier prizes.

La Primitiva Drawing Schedule

La Primitiva Payouts and Odds of Winning

There are seven prize tiers that you can win in La Primitiva. Almost all of them, aside from the Match 3 one, are calculated on the pair mutuel basis, which means that they depend on how many tickets were sold and how many winners there are in a specific prize tier. Here is a short overview of how much of the prize pool will be dedicated to different prize tiers, as well as what are the odds of winning:

  • 6 main numbers + Reintegro – jackpot + special prize (20% of the prize pool); odds are 1 in 139,838,160
