About Lotto Max
Lotto Max is a Canadian Lottery that was established in 2009 – the first draw was held on September 25, 2009. The lottery game replaced Lotto Super 7. Just like its predecessor, it is operated by Interprovincial Lottery Corporation.
In 2019, major changes were introduced. First of all, a second draw was added (on Tuesdays), a 50-number field (previously 49), two additional prize tiers, and a maximum jackpot of $70 million.
How To Play Lotto Max
In order to play Lotto Max, you need to pick seven numbers from 1 to 50. One play allows you to make the selection three times. You can either choose the numbers yourself or let the computer pick for you by choosing ‘Quick Play.’ To win, you need to match at least three main numbers.
Depending on where you purchase a ticket, you can play regional add-on games that can be added to your Lotto Max ticket. The ‘spiel’ game, which can also be found as Tag, Encore or Extra depending on the region, adds six or seven digits to the ticket. If the numbers match your own, you can win $100,000 for six numbers matched or $250,000 to $1,000,000 for a matching seven numbers. The exact prize depends on the region – you win $1,000,000 in Ontario and Quebec and $250,000 in the Western Canada region of Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, and the territories.
An interesting feature is the Combination Plays, which allow you to pick more than seven numbers (you can pick either eight or nine). The numbers are eligible for the main draw, as well as the Maxmillions draws when they are held. Since you have multiple selections, you can win more than one prize. What’s more, you can play up to 10 games in advance.
The minimum jackpot is $10,000,000. It keeps growing until someone finally buys the winning ticket – however, it cannot get higher than $70,000,000. Once the $50,000,000 mark is passed, Maxmillions come into play – those are prizes of $1 million. After exceeding $50,000,000, the jackpot is capped at an amount between $50,000,000 and $70,000,000. The excess is divided into Maxmillions prizes, and the rest is added to the prize pool for matching 6 main numbers and the bonus number.
Let us give you an example so that it becomes as clear as possible. Let’s say that the advertised jackpot for the next draw is $55 million. If the prize pool reaches $58,560,000, in addition to the jackpot, there will be three Megamillions prizes drawn. The remaining $560,000 will be added to the 6 main numbers and the bonus prize tier.
Lotto Max Drawing Schedule
The Lotto Max draws are organized two times a week, on Tuesday and Friday not long after the tickets become unavailable for sale, which is 9:30 p.m. CT / 8:30 p.m. MT / 7:30 p.m. PT. The draws are held in Toronto, Canada.
Lotto Max Payouts and Odds of Winning
There are nine prize tiers in Lotto Max, most of which are calculated on a pari-mutuel basis (aside from Match 3, Match 3 + Bonus, and Match 4 prizes) – this means that how much each winner will get depends on how many tickets were sold, as well as how many people matched the same amount of numbers.
Here is a short overview of prizes, as well as what are their odds of winning:
- 7 main numbers – jackpot (87.25% of the prize fund); odds are 1 in 33,294,800

Lotto Max lottery tickets are available at most third-party lottery sites, which means that you can test your luck even if you aren’t Canadian. What’s more, many sites offer welcome bonuses or subscriptions, thanks to which you won’t have to purchase a new ticket all the time – it will be automatically played until the moment you cancel the subscription. Additionally, some of them also offer syndicates, which means that you can play with more lottery enthusiasts and have more chances of winning.
What To Do if I Win Lotto Max – How To Claim the Prize?
If once the official winning numbers are announced, and they end up being the ones you picked, you probably want to know how you can claim your prize. Well, this mostly depends on the amount you won.
Prizes up to $100 can be claimed at retail outlets or by mail. If you go to a retailer, the prize will be automatically validated once the ticket is scanned, which means that the retailer has to either pay this prize or make arrangements to do so.
Prizes between $100 and $1,000 can also be claimed at retail outlets or by mail. In this case, you have to ask the retailer if they have enough funds to pay your prize, as they are not obligated to pay prizes that exceed $100. If they don’t, the retailer has the right to cancel the validation and direct you, for example, to another retailer.
Prizes between $1,001 and $9,999.99 can be claimed by mail or in the nearest prize payout office – contact them for information and instructions on what to do next.
Finally, prizes over $10,000 can be claimed in two ways – by mail or in the nearest prize payout office – to get more information on how to do it, you need to contact them directly.
It is worth mentioning that, as is the case with the rest of the Canadian lottery jackpot games, the winner will receive their prize in a tax-free lump sum.
If you bought your lottery tickets online, then your winnings will most likely be transferred into your account once the official winning numbers are announced, and the lottery site receives the money. Make sure to read the policy on the lottery website you purchased the ticket from to know for sure how it works.
